German Violin Master Luthiers Of Old

The original German luthiers crafted some of the most popular antique violins. Jacob Stainer, Matthias and Sebastion Klotz and Leopold Widhalm are a few of the more famous German violin craftsmen. The contributions of three of these masters to the world of music is the topic of this article.

The man who is most often considered the greatest of all the German violin makers was Jacob Stainer who was born in 1621. It is very likely that Stainer worked with someone from the Amati violin family, because the varnish he used on his violins was very similar to that used by the Amatis. Stainer was able to achieve a fantastic tone in his violins, probably helped by the fact that he was a competent violinist in his own right. Unfortunately, in 1669 Stainer was arrested for heresy which he would not refute. After spending time in jail, he found his fortunes gone and his family impoverished. Unable to raise himself from this situation, Stainer developed mental difficulties and died in 1683.

Matthias Klotz was born in 1656 and was the founder of violin making in Mittenwald. Klotz’s work was influenced by Stainer. The ground on his violins has turned a dark color and the varnish is a yellow color. He died in 1743. Another member of the Klotz family, Sebastian Klotz (1696-1768), is widely considered to be the finest maker in Mittenwald. His son, Joseph Klotz, patterned his violins after those of his father.

Leopold came into the world in Germany a bit after the turn of the eighteenth century. Many people think that he was the most talented violin artisan of the period. The wood, combined with the stain and shape made the instrument unique. He left us at just a bit more than 50 years of age.

Backpack Mule Deer Hunting 101

Have you dreamed for years of hunting for mule deer miles from the nearest road? It has been said that it’s not the hunt that is the greatest challenge, it’s getting there. The same goes for true wilderness mule deer hunts. Mule deer live in some of the most beautiful,uninhabited areas in the world. Just seeing these beautiful deer and the country they live in is enough to make the pain worthwhile. With that said, here is some advice to make your first backcountry mule deer hunt a success.

Get in shape! I’m not talking about walking to your mailbox once a day or playing a game of basketball once a month. To truly enjoy your mule deer hunt, you want to be in the best shape of your life. I understand, depending on your age, that may not be possible, so if that’s the case, shoot for the best shape you’ve been in for the last fifteen years. The big thing here is to do everything you can. My workout is jogging three to four times a week. I start out walking and jogging about four months before the trip and by the time trip arrives, my goal is to be able to jog for an hour and a half straight. I find this easier than trying to give distances. If you can maintain a jogging pace for an hour, you should be capable of climbing the mountains required for backcountry mule deer hunting. I also jump rope, bike, hike, and walk with my loaded pack (around 45 lbs) in between. All of these are great for getting your body and muscles in tone for hunting.

Pull out your favorite rifle and shoot it. If you pay the money for the tags or outfitter, get in shape, but don’t practice with your rifle, you aren’t ready to go mule deer hunting. The best case would be to shoot the rifle once a week at ranges out to 350 yards. You need to know the amount of bullet drop at different distances. Start out at the range at 200 yards with a steady sandbag rest. Purchase different brands of ammunition and test them until you find what your gun likes and stick with it. I use Winchester Silvertips in 270, but each rifle shoots differently and you need to find the bullet that works. Once you know where your rifle shoots on the bench, try using sitting position, prone position and other positions you will encounter in the field. You won’t have a bench on your hunt and even if you’re a great bench shooter, that doesn’t make you a great shot in a hunting situation. You will also want to study up on angles versus distances. Most shots at mule deer are across or down canyon and hunters have a tendency to miss the deer. Get out and practice some shots downhill and uphill. You’ll be amazed at the difference a steep angle makes. I also recommend you buy a laser rangefinder and use it at your practice sessions. It is also helpful to learn to judge mule deer in the field. The hunting videos by Mossback Outfitters titled Mulies Gone Wild are an excellent tool for judging giant mulies. They give you the B&C or P&Y score after you have seen footage of the bucks on the hoof.

Buy the best gear your budget will allow. There are some excellent products on the market today. Look for the lightest sturdiest material for your clothing and backpack items. I will not go into each item, but a few I recommend are: strong, sturdy hiking boots - I use Lowa Sheephunter boots, an internal pack - I use a North Face pack, but there are lots on the market, wool socks - I use Cabelas, and light packable rain gear - I use Frogg Toggs. If you are hunting with an outfitter, he has the experience to tell you what you need. Buy the best optics you can afford! I personally use Leica 8-12×42 because of their magnification and weight, but there are lots of excellent binoculars on the market. I’ll say it again, get the best you can afford.

Early Masters Of Italian Violin Making

Old Italian violins are generally revered as the “holy grail” in the violin world. This is due, in part at least, to the early Italian luthiers who forever forged a place in the instrument’s history with their master craftsmanship and devotion to this lovely instrument. In this article, we’ll take a brief look at three of the highly regarded, early Italian violin makers from the Cremona school.

Nicolo Amati, born 1596, was the son and disciple of Girolamo Amati. He is considered the finest luthier of his family. Among the many beloved attributes of Amati’s violins is their brilliant varnish in shades from yellow-brown to a golden red. Equally captivating is their tone which is penetrating and sweet but, because of the higher arching, lack the sheer power of a Stradivari. The length of his violins were mostly 14 inches or slightly under. Many of his family were lost to the plague, but Nicolo survived to become the master of the greatest violin maker who ever lived, Antonio Stradivari. Nicolo Amati died in 1684.

Antonio Stradivari, born 1644, made violins even up to the year of his death in 1737. He inscribed on his labels his age at various times even up to “d’Anni 93″, a reference to his age of 93 at the time. A verbal description of him by a violin virtuoso, Polledro, who alleged that his old teacher had known Stradivari personally) was that he was a tall and lean man who wore a white wollen cap and white leather apron when working. Stradivari violins provide evidence that he was a pupil of Nicolo Amati. In fact, it is alleged that he became Amati’s pupil at 11 years of age.

Born in 1676, Carlo Bergonzi worked beside Antonio Stradivari in his workshop. Bergonzi also lived in Stradivari’s house after 1746. It is said that Bergonzi was Stradivari’s favorite pupil. Bergonzi hence inheirited all the working materials of Stradivari in 1742, just before his death in 1747. Bergonzi’s violins are one of the best concert violins. They are said to be capable of reaching the corners of the largest concert halls with their magnificent, brilliant tone.

The Cremona school of violin making is highly esteemed in the violin world today and it is due in no small part to the love of the violin demonstrated by these three Italian luthiers in their workmanship which has stood the test of time.

Stradivarius Violins Made By A Famous Italian Craftsman

The name of Antonio Stradivari resounds with every would-be violin player, and each is well aware that Stradivari’s creations, named for him in the Latin version of his surname, are inimitably crafted musical instruments. Stradivarius violins have gained international renown both for the clarity and loveliness of the music they produce and for the incredible prices would-be buyers are willing to pay for them.

The Italian violin was the premier instrument for many centuries for all who play strings, and Italy produced some of the most skilled violin makers in history. All violinists know about Amati and Guarneri, but Stradivari is without doubt the most notable and respected and his instruments still the most coveted. He was in fact a student of Amati himself, but exceeded even that great a master.

Stradivarius violins are accompanied by other Stradivari instruments in some professional combos and orchestras for he also made violas, cellos, guitars, and harps. It is estimated that about 70% of the instruments he built still survive and almost all are playable and in regular use. Considering that Stradivari died in 1737, survival of that many instruments is just more verification of the quality.

Two main things distinguished the Stradivarius violins and other instruments from those of other luthiers. (A luthier is a maker of any stringed instrument, and the word comes from the root for “lute.”) One was construction, with the style of the arching in the curves of the body and case being an innovation. Stradivari also changed the thick and thin parts of the body to a precise measurement he evolved for the best sound, and his instruments are remarkably similar in sound to each other as a result.

Many people think the critical secret to the “Strad” is the varnish used to cover and protect the wood. Stradivari created his own formula and kept it a closely guarded secret and other luthiers have been trying to duplicate it for many years. One problem is that analysis would damage an instrument, and few owners would consider taking that risk. People are still trying to match his techniques today.

A situation in which a famous violinist would turn down the chance to play a Stradivarius violin is highly unlikely. It’s difficult to own one or more of these prized instruments as they cost upwards of $3.5 million. Because there are so many imitations, these instruments are kept careful track of.

”Strads” with the Latin words label “Antonius Stradivarius Cremonensis Faciebat Anno” (”made in Cremona by Antonio Stradivari”) and with a date at the end of the inscription are typically real. But the problem is that fake, copycat “Strads” do also! Most beginners have ones that are not expensive and have both the Lain words and the date inscribe on them but as a reality check there is a tiny “copy of” or “replica” etched in, too. Some countries have laws that make replicas legal as long as they have these tiny words written on them.
